Perception of Change

Len on beachChange is an interesting process. Some people view it as stressful, while others embrace it. Why is that? For myself, I welcome and thrive on change! But, I’m finding that isn’t the case for most people. For example, yesterday my father called to tell me that he sold his home in Illinois and purchased a new home in a retirement community. The whole process will be completed in less than six weeks. I exclaimed, “How exciting!…..you will live in a community where yard maintenance is taken care of for you, and you’ll have access to a  community center to meet other folks your own age!” Well, my dad was less than thrilled, since he felt sad to leave his current home surrounded by nature (which he loves!), and move to a “new” environment. The thought of changing his life seemed stressful and challenging. As an eighty six year old man, that probably makes sense. Although my advice to him was to totally embrace the change. Dive into the experience! Change is perception. Like Lou Holtz claims, “Life is 10% of what happens to you in life, and 90% on how you react to it!” That is so true. We have a choice in how we react to our experiences. So, when you face change, in any area of your life, be sure to look at the benefits and advantages of the change. Face it head-on and embrace it, even when it may be scary or stressful!
