GUTS in 2012!

Do you have the GUTS to move forward this year? It’s the end of January, and the first month in this magnificent new year. A time for pressing the restart button, creating a clean slate, and deciding what activities you want to continue into this exciting new year. Not to mention what activities you want to discard or change!

We all have the opportunity to create our environment, and experiences. And to be able to change what we can change, in order to make our lives just work better! Some experiences can’t be changed, but most can be adjusted, or enhanced with either the power of the mind, and how we look at our situation. We also can ask more questions that would provide answers to lead to solutions!

The first step in the GUTS formula is GAIN KNOWLEDGE – representing the “G” in my proven 4Step GUTS FORMULA.

Each of us can take responsibility for deepening our knowledge in our jobs, hobbies, or personal life in order to learn and grow. In our chosen field of work it’s extremely important that we find ways to become an expert in our field, or at least become more knowledgeable.

This is good for two reasons: First, it boosts our own confidence level when we know more about a particular subject or profession. Second, it gives us a competitive edge. When prospects are making a choice among various vendors and salespeople, they typically choose to do business with those who are leaders in their field. Anyone can become a leader by earning additional credentials and/or designations and taking more classes or seminars in his or her industry.

Make a plan in 2012 to GAIN KNOWLEDGE and you will realize positive results and a huge boost in your confidence level!

Stay tuned to learn about the rest of the GUTS FORMULA techniques that will help you move forward this year!

Give a Compliment

Give Someone a ComplimentHow often have you told someone you appreciate them, or lavish them a compliment? It only takes a minute, and it means so much to the recipient.

The trick is to be sincere about your compliment – and it has to come from the heart. No one likes false praise. People know when you are just trying to make points by saying something nice, versus expressing an honest and heartfelt comment. Read the rest of this entry »

Domestic Violence Affects Animals Too

Domestic Violence Affects Animals TooRecently I read an article in our local paper, The Fernandina Newsleader, by Adrienne Dessy about the “Forgotten victims of family violence”… in other words, animals. Adrienne explained the growing concern of animal abuse in domestic violence family households.

It’s hard to believe that even family pets are affected by violence in the family, but they are.

“In a 2003 study by the American Animal Hospital Association, an estimated 88 percent of pets living in households with domestic violence are either abused or killed.” This is a way that an abuser can cause even more emotional and physical abuse in the household. Read the rest of this entry »

Joe Biden, The View and Domestic Violence

Joe Biden on the ViewJoe Biden appeared on THE VIEW yesterday to talk about the increasing problem of teen violence, abuse, and bullying. It was seventeen years ago that the Violence Against Women Act was passed. Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson who was murdered in 1994, has been an advocate in preventing domestic violence for seventeen years as well. In fact, Denise was asked to speak in front of Congress about this piece of legislation to help get it passed! And it did!

VP Biden stated on The View that passing this particular legislation was the “most significant thing he has ever done in his life.” A bold statement from a bold man. Good for him! He is making a difference for women and standing up for their rights.

Since this law was passed the rate of domestic violence cases has decreased to 50%. That is good news. Unfortunately, Read the rest of this entry »

Appreciate Your Own Backyard

Amelia IslandHow does it get any better than this? This is a question that we can ask ourselves to express gratitude for what we have in our lives. A friend told me yesterday that she enjoyed sitting on her patio, listening to the birds, and watering her amazing flowers. That gave her peace and happiness in starting her day.

That gave me pause this morning to talk a walk on the beach and appreciate the natural beauty right in my own backyard. And with Hurricane Irene pounding other areas of the country, I gave thanks that Amelia Island was safe and sound. We are lucky to have missed the storms and hope that the other areas of the country aren’t too badly damaged from the weather. Read the rest of this entry »

What is your community like?

Rotary Club Logo“It is much easier to hold ourselves in the true consciousness when we are associated with those who think as we do.”
Charles Fillmore

Studies have shown that who you surround yourself with influences your behavior. What kind of individuals do you spend the most time with? Are they positive or negative? Do they share the same interests? Are they a good influence on you? These are important questions to ask yourself as you go about your daily activities and plan your future. How we spend our time in a spiritual way is also an important aspect of our lives. Read the rest of this entry »

Perception of Change

Len on beachChange is an interesting process. Some people view it as stressful, while others embrace it. Why is that? For myself, I welcome and thrive on change! But, I’m finding that isn’t the case for most people. For example, yesterday my father called to tell me that he sold his home in Illinois and purchased a new home in a retirement community. The whole process will be completed in less than six weeks. I exclaimed, “How exciting!…..you will live in a community where yard maintenance is taken care of for you, and you’ll have access to a  community center to meet other folks your own age!” Well, my dad was less than thrilled, since he felt sad to leave his current home surrounded by nature (which he loves!), and move to a “new” environment. Live in the now!

This morning I woke up thinking about time. Time we spend, time we waste, and time that goes too fast! How often do we let precious time go by and not realize its meaning or purpose. I read an article that referenced basketball and “crunch time” as an analogy of a period of time at the end of a game in which players are focused on winning the game. Each player must think only of making something happen to ensure victory! Let me explain. When there is only a few moments left in a game and the score is tied, or very close, the players need to be totally focused in the present moment to shoot a basket for a win.
