Appreciate Your Own Backyard

Amelia IslandHow does it get any better than this? This is a question that we can ask ourselves to express gratitude for what we have in our lives. A friend told me yesterday that she enjoyed sitting on her patio, listening to the birds, and watering her amazing flowers. That gave her peace and happiness in starting her day.

That gave me pause this morning to talk a walk on the beach and appreciate the natural beauty right in my own backyard. And with Hurricane Irene pounding other areas of the country, I gave thanks that Amelia Island was safe and sound. We are lucky to have missed the storms and hope that the other areas of the country aren’t too badly damaged from the weather.

After living on Amelia Island for thirteen years, I saw my FIRST turtle walking steadfastly down the beach, looking like he had a purpose in mind, although not moving terribly fast to get there. That sight, and picking up shells along the way was peaceful and comforting. It’s the gentle, easy experiences that can also be the most rewarding. And it doesn’t have to cost a dime to do them.

My advice is to find the beauty in YOUR own backyard, wherever that may be, and appreciate what you have and treasure small, and easy experiences along the way.

Sometimes we wait for the “big break” to happen to us, or set our goals so high that it gets discouraging when it either doesn’t happen, or takes forever to get there.

Life is about the journey anyway, not the end result.

Have a great day – and your own beautiful experience!
